    Return On Investment

Sometimes, it’s hard to get a clear understanding of the return on investment when it comes to funding custom software, especially since custom software can be significantly more expensive than out-of–the-box software.

Our requirements engineers work with you to understand your needs and provide custom database solutions that improve both the economic and the technical situation.

Businesses that use custom software have an advantage over their competition because their software is designed to fit their exact requirements, including their need to have the software save them much more money than it costs.

An ROI Example using the Data Feed

We’ve developed an example of how custom software can save you money. While the example is hypothetical, it could easily be your business, and you could potentially be saving even more money than the example presents.

If your employees spend 15 minutes on entering an order into the Mayflower mainframe system, then at 10 orders a day, they’re spending 2.5 hours a day just entering orders. If your employees' loaded wage rate is $45 per hour then the daily cost of entering orders is $112.50. There are 261 business days in the average year, meaning that you’re spending more than $29,000 every year, just to enter orders!

    Item Numbers
Time required to enter an order 15 minutes
Number of orders per day 10 orders
Time spent entering orders per day 2.5 hours
Employees' loaded wage rate $45 an hour
Daily cost of entering orders $112.50
Number of business days in a year 261 days
Annual cost of entering orders $29,362

If you have your own local (custom or off-the-shelf) shipment database already, and you involve us to extract the data from there and send it to Mayflower automatically, we typically charge between $10,000 and $30,000 to develop software for the data feed. Let's assume your current system architecture and requirements affect the work such that you end up spending $20,000 on this.

If you don't yet have your own local shipment database already, you're in luck because our team has created dozens of custom databases over many years, and we can create one optimized to your needs. The ROI of that is outside the scope of this analysis since its benefits greatly transcend a mere data feed.

Mayflower created the data feed process fairly recently, and it's not yet all-encompassing. Not every data element can be sent using this feed. An uploaded record comes into existence in the Mayflower mainframe system, but your employees still have to add some data manually to be able to register and complete the order.

Let's estimate your employees now spend only 5 minutes a day entering the non-uploadable information on each order. Only 50 minutes a day are thus spent entering orders, and you’re spending $37.50 each day doing so – significantly reduced from the $112.50 you were paying without the system. You reduced your labor costs by more than $19,500 per year. This is nearly a 100% return on investment on the $20,000 spent, in just one year.

After the original cost has been recovered, your business is more than $19,500 ahead every year that the software remains in use, due to having involved us in the automation of just this one process.

    Item Numbers

Annual cost of entering orders $9,787
